Before I made ads, I made music.
Very loud music. In the early '80s, I played guitar in the punk band, Eddie Estrogen and the Hormones at such renowned clubs as CBGB's and Max's Kansas City. But eventually, I realized that advertising was what I really wanted to do. (Back then, advertising creatives were as prone to smashing up stuff as punk rockers. And the pay was better.) Applying my degree in illustration and advertising design, I then spent eight years as an art director at some of New York's top agencies, including Della Femina Travisano & Partners, before realizing I was actually a copywriter trapped in an art director's body. After the surgery, I worked as a writer on the brand side at Messner Vetere Berger McNamee (now Euro RSCG) and as a Creative Director in direct and digital at Ogilvy before joining Glow Worm as its Executive Creative Director. Today I am the co-founder and "Chief Creative Extrovert" at Extrovertic, a new kind of marketing and communications agency dedicated to helping businesses engage with customers so much that they'll actually recommend your product to their own friends and families. For more information about how Extrovertic's social media and other solutions can help your business, click here. While new thinking is at the heart of Extrovertic, it has always been close to my heart. Over the years, I've used new thinking to help agencies win and transform many brands, including DHL and Time Warner Cable. While Creative Director on the direct portion of DHL, the account won the Ogilvy 360º Award and a Silver Effie. And a campaign for FM Global insurance won Best Campaign and Best of Show at the CEBA awards, one Gold and four Silvers at the Addys, five Silver District Two Addys and one Bronze at the New York Print Festival. A number of my DRTV commercials for American Express have won awards in general advertising competitions, while at the same time, performing so well that they've become the controls for their brands. Some are still running, unbeaten, years after they were introduced. I live in New Jersey with my wife, three daughters, two dogs and two guinea pigs. And I still can bang out three chords with the best of them.
